Celebrating 6 Years of Blogging

Hello and welcome to my blog! I’m glad you’re here. It’s week 41 in 2022 and I’m hosting Weekend Coffee Share linkup #91. Come on in for a coffee or tea, and let’s catch up.

October 10, 2022 marked the 6th anniversary of my first post on the Natalie the Explorer blog. The milestone inspires me to share some of my thoughts on blogging, hosting and participating in blog linkups and photo challenges.

Blogging

I started the blog on Blogger in October 2016. I moved from Blogger to WordPress in May 2019. The move to WordPress is good for me as most of the bloggers I connect with are on WordPress, and it’s convenient to read blogs and leave comments when you’re on the same platform.

What I enjoy about blogging:

  1. Having a hobby, a creative outlet and a digital record of my adventures.
  2. Sharing the beauty and wonders of our planet Earth by text and pictures.
  3. Connecting with and learning from other bloggers and blog readers around the world. I’ve had the pleasure to meet several bloggers in real life.

Thank you to everyone who visits Natalie the Explorer. I appreciate all the visits, likes, comments and shares over the years. I value each and every one of my blogging friends and everyone who took the time to leave a comment. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement through the years.

Hosting

I experimented with hosting the monthly Wellness Wednesday linkup in 2018-2019 and the monthly Wellness Weekend linkup in 2020. I’ve been hosting the weekly Weekend Coffee Share linkup since January 2021. I hope to reach the 100th linkup soon. 100 sounds like a nice milestone.

What encourages me to host:

  1. Receiving comments from linkup participants who take time to read my blog and leave a comment.
  2. Seeing a good number of bloggers join weekly and connect with other bloggers via comments.
  3. Seeing linkup participants do link backs and pingback to promote the linkup. Here’s WordPress how to create a pingback.

A linkup becomes stale when bloggers join in without leaving comments for the host and other participants. It’s like having a party with no conversation and no social connection.

Some blog hosts use InLinkz. Some hosts have participants leave their links in the Comments and the host does the roundup of participants. I’ve been using InLinkz for the weekly Weekend Coffee Share linkup, however, I’m thinking about using the Comments and roundup in the new year. I’ll let you know when I decide to change how I host my linkup.

Thank you to everyone who actively participates in my weekly Weekend Coffee Share linkup. I appreciate all the comments, contributions, link-backs and pingbacks.

Participating

I enjoy participating in selected blog link parties and photo challenges to support my fellow blog hosts and have fun. The following gallery (and my header photo) is my contribution to Terri’s Sunday Stills October colour challenge and Denyse’s Words & Pics linkup.

I hope to share a pleasant walk with you next week.

What keeps you blogging? What encourages you to participate in a blog linkup or blog challenge?

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

Congratulations on this milestone. You’ve found a lovely way to write your blog and share your photos. I look forward to seeing what you do each week.

What keeps me blogging? I like to write AND I adore the comments I get. People are smart and fun and insightful.

What encourages me to participate in a blog linkup or blog challenge? I rarely do those things anymore, but when I was new to blogging I did them religiously. They can be fun, but do require you to be a follower rather than finding your own path… which seems to be where I am now. Who knows, though, I might have a change of heart about them one day.

Thank you, Ally, for your kind comments and answers to my questions. I’m happy and humbled that you look forward to seeing what I do each week. I think most new bloggers participate in a blog linkup or challenge to ‘find their tribe’ and build readership and blogging connections. Bloggers who have regular readers and followers tend to be independent. I’m kind of at a half way mark 🙂 What’s cool is that we can change our blogging approach and direction whenever we want to. Have a great weekend!

Well done on 6 years Natalie and on hosting this link party so successfully. You’re right about the importance of commenting and engaging to make the party work. Thanks for all the link ups and for sharing your world with the rest of us.

And my reason for participating is to meet other bloggers who are on a similar journey. I only participate in two parties now because the others really don’t fit what I like to write about. Thanks for being one of them. 🙂

Thank you, Leanne, for your kind comments. I’m happy and honoured that you choose to participate in my linkup. I like to keep my linkup topic open so participants can write about whatever they want to share and the variety of topics makes my blog reading interesting. What you write about is relatable and relevant to many Weekend Coffee Share participants so I greatly appreciate your blog. Have a great weekend!

Hi Natalie, congratulations on having completed another successful year of blogging. I look forward to your weekly posts, especially those that ‘show and tell’ about your beautiful city.

I have yet to make any blog challenge or link-up a habit. Your weekly Coffee Share most suits my content, which is typically about our evolving retirement story and the lifestyle habits we practice to maintain balance. I try to avoid writing specifically to a challenge and prefer to write what I want and then link to a challenge if it seems appropriate to do so. Once in a while, I post specifically for a photo challenge, which I do enjoy, but I have found that those don’t really add to my readership. I enjoy having conversations through the comments section and making new connections is always a goal. Most photo challenge viewers tend to hit like and run. Not complaining, just sayin’.

I do find that I read more posts from challenges when the host has used the InLinkz organizer to group the posts. It makes it easy to click, read and move on to the next. Just my two cents on that topic. Cheers to the next six years and beyond!

Thank you, Suzanne, for your kind and thoughtful comments. I’m happy and humbled to hear you look forward to my weekly posts, especially those about my beautiful city. I share from a longtime resident’s lens and many of the places that I write about don’t appear on Toronto’s tourist brochures.

I’m happy to hear my weekly linkup most suits your content. I like to keep the linkup topic open so I (and participants) can write whatever comes to mind that week. I also like your blogging approach, i.e. write what you want and link to a challenge if it seems appropriate to do so. What you write about is relevant to me and other Coffee Share participants who are on a similar journey so I greatly appreciate your blog.

Thank you for your feedback on the InLinkz, too. It’s good for me to know what makes it easy and convenient for my linkup participants. Have a wonderful weekend!

Huge congrats to you Natalie for 6 years of blogging! And almost 100 weeks of Coffee Share! Your reasons for the enjoyment mirror my own, and as a host, I am floored by the few that link and run. I feel honored that you included this week’s Sunday Stills prompt. What lovely pics of the orange and black flowers and butterflies–’tis the season, right?

Congratulations on a long and varied blogging experience! I do it for many of the same reasons as you do, and also to chronicle things going on in my own life. More than a few times husband has asked when we did something and I check the blog to find out. And when I’m feeling nostalgic I sometimes randomly pop around in old posts…especially if they are written by Katie-girl.

Congratulations on your anniversary. I enjoy your coffee break linkup as I feel I can write about anything. I think using linkup makes it easier to find other people’s posts. If someone uses the comment section instead you have to scroll through a lot of chitchat to find links. I think yours has about the right number of participants so it is easy to read most people’s efforts.

Happy blog-aversary! I’ve learned about so many cool places from your blog!

Like you, I love connecting with other bloggers around the world and learning from their perspectives. I also love being able to write and publish short pieces quickly and have people read and engage with them. I enjoy fiction writing, but sometimes the lag between writing a piece and having it read is pretty long. Blogging feels more like a conversation. And finally, there are no rules. I can write about whatever infests my twisted brain at the moment–and sometimes other people actually find it entertaining. What’s not to love?

Thanks so much for hosting the Weekend Coffee Share! Thanks to your efforts, I’ve found a community of interesting bloggers.

Congratulations on your bloggoversary! And cheers to many more milestones to come!
I first found the weekend coffee share a few hosts ago, and by chance. I had written a post about having coffee together with my readers ( a different blog.) When WordPress gave me suggestions of several coffee shares, and I read some of them, I liked the idea, and joined. When time permit and the challenge speaks to me I sometimes participate in other challenges as well, but lately the weekend coffee share is the only challenge I actually participate in every week. I like hanging out with all of you ❤
Having a cup of coffee, or tea, with someone can turn out to be a friendly cup of coffee, a life changing conversation, the beginning of a new friendship…or anything your heart desires. I think that is what I like the most. Given the loose rules of conduct there's no pressure whatsoever, and it is easy to participate. And you are a very good host Natalie!

In the first two years of COVID-19 pandemic, I had time to explore downtown Toronto and write down my discoveries. Fortunately, I enjoy walking which is the best way to explore an area in-depth as it allows me to see things at ground level and close up. This city continues to amaze me. I have a queue of things to write about. I hope you visit my blog often and become a friend 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend!

Congratulations on the 6 years! I started on WordPress and hate to admit that I enjoy reading other WP blogs for the reasons you list – it is so much easier to like, comment, etc. Doing the Weekly Smile I tried both InLinkz and doing a compilation – the problem with the compilation is that it is harder for another blogger to go through and find them all – until you put up the compilation post, I’d have to dig through all of the comments on your post trying to figure out which ones I hit. And it is a lot of work – creating that post every week was very time consuming!
Anyway, I hope you have a great weekend and a wonderful week ahead!

Trent, Thank you for sharing your experience with InLinkz and doing a compilation. After reading other WCS bloggers’ comments and yours, I’m staying with InLinkz for the foreseeable future. I want to make it easy for bloggers to join the linkup and to see participating blogs. I definitely don’t want more work to host the weekly WCS linkup. There is a limit of how much time to spend on blogging and hosting because the great outdoors are calling 🙂 Have a great weekend!

My main reasons for blogging are to collect my experiences and share them, inspire readers and other travelers, and connect with the amazing blogging community.

If I would have more time (maybe whenever – if ever – I manage to retire from work and the nomadic lifestyle), I would join challenges and link-ups more. I always have enough photos for any challenges, but it would take too much time to browse my extensive photo archives to put a post together.

Why are you thinking of changing the link-up method to comments, Natalie?

    Like

    • Natalie October 15, 2022 / 2:04 pm

Thank you, Liesbet, for your comment. I experience time constraints, too. Even though I have lots of things to write about and pictures to share, I barely manage to publish one post per week. I came to accept that the rest of my experiences will have to wait in a queue. Perhaps I’ll use some of the materials for my to-be-written memoir 🙂

I was thinking of changing the linkup method with the hope that the Comments way would be less time consuming for me and the participants. Either method has pros and cons. Based on the feedback I received, I think I’ll stay with InLinkz for now.

Wow, you had a lot of comments on your anniversary post. Congratulations. I am approaching 11 or 12 years, I think. I know I am over 10 years. I have poured a lot into my blog and have so many to follow that it is no longer possible to follow everyone. I had to make choices on who I would try to follow. I am just coming back from a hiatus. I simply couldn’t keep up with my blog then, and I had to step away for a bit. I started my blogs (3) to post my fiction and non-fiction. Every now and then, I read through them again to weed out what I feel is no longer a fair representation of my work. My work improved as time wore on, so I am slowly working through the old stuff and maybe will eliminate a blog if possible. I move the stuff I still like over to my newest blog, which I am using now. I personally love doing the prompts. I have come up with some decent stories using the prompts. I like to write what I call serial prompts, and they can be anywhere from 2 parts to even 40 or more parts. They are rather challenging, and so is the flash fiction of 99 to 100 words. It’s fun, though. I try to participate in the weekly coffee share as much as possible. You are my third host for the coffee share as well. I would not see it disappear and then read it in Trent’s posts and rejoin with the new host. Congratulations again!

Thank you, Tessa, for your comment. Congratulations on your 10-plus years of blogging! The weekly Weekend Coffee Share linkup has had a few hosts before I started hosting. Hopefully I’ll reach ‘the WCS host who hosts the longest’ status in the new year.

Hi Natalie, Congratulations on your anniversary. You have done well in developing a community here.

I look forward to both reading and writing the Weekend Coffee Share. You have taught me so much about Toronto and I would love to visit your beautiful city someday. I enjoy reading the blogs of your readers and the comments as well because I know many of them now and look forward to what they have to share about their lives.

I agree with Gary and some of your other readers about In Links. It’s slow and sometimes I have to switch to their blog and then their post to comment. It doesn’t always work for making comments. Like Terri, you echo my thoughts about the many reasons for blogging.

I like to participate each week because it gives me a chance to catch up on other challenges as well as to share a bit of my week. I like your style and what you share, so it makes a great template for meditating on my week and writing it in a way that I hope others will also enjoy.

Thank you, Marsha, for your thoughtful comments and ongoing support. I’m happy to hear you look forward to both reading and writing the WCS. I love that the WCS blogging community is international with bloggers and readers from five continents so we can all learn something new every week. I hope you visit Toronto and get to see some of its beauty.

I appreciate you find ways to work around InLinkz even when it’s slow. Atm, the pros of using it seem to outweigh the cons so I use it.

I’m flattered and humbled that you like my blogging style. I enjoy reading your blog, seeing your pictures, and participating in your PPAC. I hope to visit Prescott some day. I’ve been to a few places in AZ before but not Prescott.

We would be honored to have you visit Prescott, my friend. We’ll even have a blogger bash (small, of course) specially for you. 🙂

Great work here Natalie on your blog’s anniversary and your care and diligence as a blogger. It’s interesting to find out more about the ‘why’ of blogging for us, and mine is to ‘connect’. It can be lonely personally at times, but connecting virtually (and meeting people like this) has made me many new friends via blogging. Thanks to your link up continuing, it’s another space for me to share when I choose. I do the paid version of InLinkz because I was given legacy status and its my preference and I have almost instant support if necessary.
I am finding having my weekly link up is good and I have been rejuvenated blogging wise.
Wishing you well with whatever you choose to do for your Weekend Coffee Share.
Great to have your blog post this week link up for Wednesday’s Words and Pics.

I look forward to see you next week, too.

    Thank you so much.

    Denyse.

Congratulations on 6 years of blogging Natalie! I used InLinkz too when I hosted a link up. Thank you for hosting yours. I link up when I can and enjoy doing so. Life has been a bit turbulent and busy for me lately though. I love the link ups as they provide a sense of community and I love meeting people from not only all across Australia but the world, like yourself. I really enjoy seeing your part of the world via your blog posts. Happy 6 years! xo

Kirstin, Thank you and congrats on your 15 years of blogging. I didn’t invest too long in Blogger before moving to WordPress so it was an easy decision. I’m glad you found me 🙂
