Public Art: Churches in Costa Rica

When I was in Costa Rica in January, I visited several small towns. Each town centre typically has a park and a church facing the park. Parks and churches of course have benches and doors.

I photographed churches that show different architectural styles and interior designs. What I know about the churches are included in the captions. I hope you enjoy the photos.

The Church of Our Lady of Mercy in Grecia is made of pre-fabricated steel plates painted red.
The church in Quesada has a tower in the centre and a simple entrance.
Pews inside the church in Quesada.
Stained glass doors and windows inside the church in Quesada.
Cathedral San Anthony de Padua in Tilarán has one tower and a dome-shaped entrance.
A free library in Tilarán Park across the street from the Cathedral.
Built in 1895, the Church of San Rafael in Zarcero has two towers.
Inside the Church of San Rafael – Elaborate pastel stencil work done by Don Misael Solis Alvarado, a local Costa Rican artist.
The topiary garden in front of the Church of San Rafael was designed by Don Evangelista Blanco in 1964.

If you have any public art you’d like to share, please leave link in the Comments or create a pingback. I’d love to see your photos. Have a good week!

Other than red brick, I don’t think I have ever seen a red church. It’s a striking color choice. The arch over the bench could be shaped like a heart with the right trimming.

Suzanne, That red church is also unusual in that it’s made of pre-fabricated steel plates, imported from Europe if I recall correctly. I agree with you about the arch over the bench. I hope your house sale and move are both going well.

I’m partiularly taken by the first one, especilly as it’s made of steel. Does it get too hot and too cold? You probably don’t know.

The red church is certainly unusual. The temperatures in Grecia (and Costa Rica in general) don’t fluctuate much throughout the year. They mainly have either dry or rainy season.

San Rafael church is my favourite, too. I like its symmetrical architecture and the incredible stencil artwork.

Like the churches mentioned also . . . but, being an avid reader, am enchanted by the ‘honesty box’ free library giving those who are interested an easy opportunity to find something useful and interesting for their time

That free library is situated by the central park in the town so I imagine there would be high turn overs of books.

That red church is striking! The others are beautiful in more subtle ways. There are so many beautiful churches in the world.

    Natalie,

Church architecture is always fascinating. When I lived in Europe, I really got into photographing them, both inside and out. The interior of the Church of San Rafael is stunning. Thanks for sharing. Joe

Joe, There’s an overwhelming number of churches in Europe. I also take photos of some of them when I visit Europe. The stencil artwork in the San Rafael church is beautiful and must take the artist a lot of hours to finish.

Teresa, Sounds like we both love colours. Thank you for your public art share that took me to St. Kilda’s charming community garden.

The red church, and the method by which it was built is quite interesting. I love the pictures, Natalie. it’s so nice when we can go behind the doors and see the interiors. The stained glass windows are lovely.

Dan, I’m pleased you love the pictures. I agree with you that it’s so nice to see the interiors. I was able to go inside two of the four churches I shared in this post and their interiors were good surprises.
