Trinity is a small town located on Trinity Bay on the Bonavista peninsula in Newfoundland, about 3 hours by road from the capital city, St. John’s.
The harbour at Trinity was first used by fishing ships around the 16th century. The Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real named the location “Trinity” as he arrived on Trinity Sunday, 1501.
Before 1700, Trinity Harbour was mainly a summer station used by merchants and shipowners. After 1700, several major merchant houses from Poole, England selected Trinity as their headquarters and under their patronage Trinity developed as one of the main Newfoundland trading centres in the English fishery.
The waterfront area on which once stood the commercial and fishery buildings of the Taverners, Lesters, Garlands and Lester-Garlands during the period 1700-1906 and in the twentieth century Ryan Brothers is named the Lester-Garland Provincial Historic Site. Some of the buildings were restored or reconstructed and are open for visitors.
I picked up a map from Trinity’s Visitor Centre and explored on my own. A walk along Trinity’s scenic harbour and winding lanes lead to houses, museums, art galleries, and other historic buildings preserved from the 19th century. Information boards posted at the historic sites give helpful explanatory notes.

I thoroughly enjoyed my walk in the charming and historic town of Trinity. I found out after my visit that Trinity was named one of the 12 best small towns in Canada by Travel + Leisure magazine in 2021. I hope to take you to another scenic town next week.

This looks like such fun. The walking path is inviting and the brickwork on the Lester-Garland house is fascinating. An obvious repair job, but very artsy inadvertently.

Trinity is quite lovely to explore. The town did a great job restoring and maintaining the historic buildings. There are artistic touches just about everywhere, including private homes and small businesses.

I agree with Dan that the boat photograph would make a great postcard. So would any of these. You did luck out on the weather. What a fun place to walk in the summer. Winters might be a bit more biting.

LOL. Slow and thorough are good things. There’s no hurry. I’m still using photos from my trip to Australia six years ago, and my for PPAC this week I scanned pictures from 1992. Wow that’s probably from before you were born. LOL.

I downloaded an app for my phone. It is fairly easy and it trims the photos and fixes the color in them, too. It’s called Photomyne.

I’m so glad. I hope you enjoy it. They have one for slides, but it is harder to use without a light board. My dad had thousands of slides and I’d love to digitize them but it is not as easy as doing photos.

Nancy, Magical is a good description for Trinity. What I love about Trinity is that the buildings and the town are authentic (not made for tourists). It looks like the town residents take pride in preserving its history and natural beauty.

Gary, Trinity would be a great place to retreat and write. I spoke to a lady at one of the homes there. She told me she’s an American writer who rented the place to write, walk, relax and write some more.

Yes, I enjoyed reading the information boards at the historic sites in Trinity. The town people take pride in keeping their properties and historic buildings in good conditions.

We also loved it and even lucked into seeing an iceberg just off shore there. I was fascinated by its long history and how well maintained it was. Unfortunately we were there in April and found only one person who told us that everything was closed until May hence no services. But still glad we want and want to return.

Trinity is a true treasure. I hope you get to visit the town again. I was there in mid-June. All services were open and just before peak tourist season.

June is likely a good time to be there. Must keep that in mind but not next June as are going to the Yukon.

The style of the buildings, with their lovely wood paneling, is very attractive, Natalie. Back in the day I imagine they were a tight knit community.

From what I read, they were a tight knit community. There were marriages between the major merchants’ families.
