My sister and I took a day trip to Niagara Falls at the end of September for two purposes:
To revisit Niagara Falls.
To walk the Fleurs de Villes floral trail.
The weather was ideal on the day of our visit: Sunny, high 21C (70F), and calm wind. Without traffic, we covered the 126 km (78 miles) driving distance from Toronto to Niagara Falls, Ontario in about 1.5 hours.
Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls. It’s named Horseshoe (since 1721) because it looks like a horseshoe. It’s also known as Canadian Falls since it’s situated in Canada. The other two falls are in the United States.
The main road along Niagara Falls is Niagara Parkway. During this visit, we were lucky to see several variations of the rainbows over Niagara Falls: one rainbow, double rainbows and full rainbow arch. They were incredible and stunning!

Here are some photos of Niagara Falls. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them.
Arrived at 10 AM at an empty parking lot with a ‘loosey goosey’ traffic jam.
First glimpse of Horseshoe Falls at 52 meters (170 feet) in height and about 670 meters (2200 feet) wide. The combination of massive volume of water and flow speed produce the mist high in the air.
The Niagara River flows at approximately 56.3 kilometers/ hour (35 miles/ hour).

A gorgeous morning guaranteed spectacular views of Niagara Falls from the Skylon Tower. The round tower on the left is the Illumination Tower.
Two exterior glass-enclosed ‘Yellow Bug’ elevators moved along the Skylon Tower: One near the round base at the top and the other near the bottom.

A small rainbow appeared to the left while the Maid of the Mist boat approached Horseshoe Falls.
The Maid of the Mist passed by the rainbow as it exited Horseshoe Falls. Note that everyone wore blue rain ponchos. You’ll get wet anyway but it’s a thrill of a lifetime to be close to Horseshoe Falls, hear its thunderous roar and feel its spray.
Double rainbows appeared at Horseshoe Falls.

Rainbow Bridge on the left is one of the three international bridges that connect the cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada and Niagara Falls, New York, United States. The other two international bridges are Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and Whirlpool Rapids Bridge.
Horseshoe Falls with double rainbows and an incredible volume of water flow. 20% of all the fresh water in the world lies in the five Great Lakes and most flows over Niagara Falls.

Lunch: Vermicelli with spring roll, grilled meat, peanuts and vegetables.

Ways to Experience Niagara Falls
I’d recommend first time visitors to experience the falls by:
Walking along Niagara Parkway at day time and staying late to see the falls illuminated every evening beginning at dusk (free).
Boat operated by Hornblower Cruise or Maid of the Mist.
Dining at the Skylon Tower. Its Revolving Dining Room restaurant silently rotates 360 degrees every hour, giving diners a constantly changing vantage point.
Helicopter or zipline if you’re adventurous.
If time permits, I’d recommend a longer stay to explore Niagara historic sites, parks, gardens, wineries, the Whirlpool Rapids, and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
I feel fortunate to have had many visits to Niagara Falls, one of the Earth’s natural wonders. This trip was by far the best: Perfect weather, no crowd, spectacular Niagara Falls with rainbows, girl time with my sister, good food, and beautiful Fleurs de Villes Niagara Falls floral trail.

I have visited Niagara Falls twice. Once, growing up with my family. The second time was about 5 years ago. What a beautiful place to visit! The last time, we walked across the Rainbow Bridge and took the Maid of the Mist excursion. Thanks for a great post and bringing back my memories. Enjoy your day!
We have been there a few times. The Canadian side is so beautiful, and this time of year (before a frost) the flowers are wonderful over there! I love the view from that side too. We haven’t been since before covid of course. Thanks for taking me back to the falls! I love your gull and rainbow shot!

Hi Natalie, I have only been to Niagra Falls once and we viewed them from the American side, on a rainy day, ugh. Obviously, the view is much better from Canada! Do you have to reserve tickets for the observation tower? Your photos make me want to visit again – from Canada, on a glorious day. The gull is a standout.
Hi Suzanne, Yes, do visit Niagara Falls from the Canadian side and on a glorious day. It’s necessary to buy tickets online for the observation decks of Skylon Tower. If you dine at the Skylon Tower revolving restaurant then admission to the Ride-to-the-Top and Indoor/Outdoor Observation Decks is free. On the US side, the Observation Tower charges a small fee to ride the elevator but the views are not as impressive as from the Skylon Tower.
Your photos are spectacular, Natalie! Nice to live relatively close to this natural wonder. I’m glad you got to spent an entire day at the falls, and in good company. Mark, Maya, and I visited Niagara Falls from the Canadian side a couple of years ago. More crowds, but still spectacular and with a blue sky. We even camped for free (boondocked) at a small parking lot close by, which allowed us to see the light display in the evening and be annoyed at the summer fireworks. (That’s when we learned that our then newly-adopted dog, Maya, was petrified of fireworks.)
Liesbet, I’m glad you, Mark and Maya visited Niagara Falls on the Canadian side and had good weather. The summer fireworks must be for Canada Day celebrations on and around July 1. Poor Maya. I think all cats and dogs detest lightning, thunderstorms and fireworks.
The falls are quite grand, I know of them mostly from the movies hahaha The tower thing reminds me of the space craft scene from the men in black movie where it turns out its actually a space craft… totally looks the part.
On the other hand it could very possibly how I pictured the Restaurant At The End Of The World from Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy
Great trip. My son was posted to the USA and my daughter-in-law’s sister and family to Toronto, so Niagara was a great trip to get together- lots of pics and the grandchildren wore the scarves I knitted them- nearest I have been to the falls!

I visited Niagara Falls when I was 18….which wasn’t yesterday…but I remember it really clearly. It was an early summer morning. Lovely to see your pictures!
Jo, The falls are spectacular year round and beautiful when lit at night in an array of colours. We lucked out to see the rainbows so clear and they lasted for a long time that day.

Dan, So great that you took your family friend to Niagara Falls. It would be one of the highlights of their trip for sure. Before the pandemic, I used to go to Niagara Falls regularly when my extended family or friends visited Toronto. There were always so many visitors at the falls so the lack of crowd on this trip was a nice relief.
I haven’t been to Niagara Falls in years. The beauty of it never changes. I hope to take my kids one of these times we visit Ontario. I would love to take them on The Maid of the Mist. Great post Natalie, thanks for sharing.

We were there this year before everything opened up and it was perfect! No crowds.
I am thinking of doing an overnight visit to see the Falls at night, take in the light show, and do some wineries.

What a great trip…that lunch looks yummy. My hubby and I visited Niagra falls in 1994. I think we did the canadian side. So pretty. I’ll have to look for photos because I can’t remember a whole lot.

It sounds like you had a wonderful time visiting Niagara Falls. The rainbows sound like they were a beautiful sight over the falls. I’ve never been across the Atlantic ocean, but my sister and brother-in-law were in Toronto some six years ago and they did visit Niagara Falls on one of their day trips.

Janet, Niagara Falls are popular for special occasions e.g. honeymoon, anniversary, etc. and are well worth a visit, especially Horseshoe Falls on Canadian side. There are plenty of wineries and scenic sights to explore in the area. I hope you get to see the falls.
I hope you get to visit Niagara Falls, especially Horseshoe Falls in Canada. The speed and volume of the water are unbelievable, year-round. I feel fortunate to have visited the falls many times (taking family and friends who visited us) and I’m always in awe to see the falls.

Hi Natalie. Thanks so much for taking us all on a vicarious trip to Niagra Falls. Your photos are spectacular. My favourite was the sea gull. Its very fortunate. I’ve never been to USA or Canada. So, obviously haven’t been to the falls, but they are spectacular. Seeing these photos reminds me of the troubles of travel photography. The weather Gods aren’t always on your side. So, you did well and were lucky.
Today, is “Freedom Day” here in Sydney. We’re out of hard lockdown, especially vaccinated people. Many, like myself, are playing it safe and it’s wet and cold today. So, I’m happy to keep tapping away on my keyboard doing my writing and research, and I’m getting no complaints from the dog.

We visited Toronto briefly in the early 1990s and drove them Niagara Parkway. We stopped to view the falls from there and I think that remains my favourite memory of the breathtaking wonder.
Several years later, I visited NY state and visited the falls from the other side.
Visiting again now vicariously through year really makes me want to return.

Niagara Falls, especially Horseshoe Falls, are so spectacular that I think any visit, especially the first visit to the falls, is unforgettable.

What a great trip…that lunch looks yummy. My hubby and I visited Niagra falls in 1994. I think we did the canadian side. So pretty. I’ll have to look for photos because I can’t remember a whole lot.

Great photos. I believe I got to visit maybe twice, but once for sure! I remember wearing raincoats to walk behind the falls.

It sounds like you had a wonderful time visiting Niagara Falls. The rainbows sound like they were a beautiful sight over the falls. I’ve never been across the Atlantic ocean, but my sister and brother-in-law were in Toronto some six years ago and they did visit Niagara Falls on one of their day trips.

Janet, Niagara Falls are popular for special occasions e.g. honeymoon, anniversary, etc. and are well worth a visit, especially Horseshoe Falls on Canadian side. There are plenty of wineries and scenic sights to explore in the area. I hope you get to see the falls.

I hope you get to visit Niagara Falls, especially Horseshoe Falls in Canada. The speed and volume of the water are unbelievable, year-round. I feel fortunate to have visited the falls many times (taking family and friends who visited us) and I’m always in awe to see the falls.

Wow! Beautiful photo’s Natalie. Of course we all have heard of Niagara falls. I think I may have even done a project on them when I was at school. I never knew (or at least I can’t remember) that it was made up of more than one falls. I thought it was just the one. Good to be educated! You’re so lucky to have access to places like this Natalie! Hi Natalie. Thanks so much for taking us all on a vicarious trip to Niagra Falls. Your photos are spectacular. My favourite was the sea gull. Its very fortunate. I’ve never been to USA or Canada. So, obviously haven’t been to the falls, but they are spectacular. Seeing these photos reminds me of the troubles of travel photography. The weather Gods aren’t always on your side. So, you did well and were lucky.
Today, is “Freedom Day” here in Sydney. We’re out of hard lockdown, especially vaccinated people. Many, like myself, are playing it safe and it’s wet and cold today. So, I’m happy to keep tapping away on my keyboard doing my writing and research, and I’m getting no complaints from the dog.

Hi Natalie, we visited Niagra Falls from Toronto about 7 years ago and of course went on the boat. I have a photo of Mike and I with our hooded rain capes on. We loved it and I also enjoyed spending time at Niagara-by-the-lake a beautiful little area. Thanks for the memories. #lifethisweek

Hi Terri, I hope you get to visit Niagara Falls on both US and Canadian sides. It’s a destination that visitors can do a day trip or an extended stay and not get bored at all. Lots to see and do there.

Had so much fun viewing your stunning series! It brought back so many good memories.
We visited Toronto briefly in the early 1990s and drove them Niagara Parkway. We stopped to view the falls from there and I think that remains my favourite memory of the breathtaking wonder.
Several years later, I visited NY state and visited the falls from the other side.
Visiting again now vicariously through year really makes me want to return.
