Hello and welcome to Weekend Coffee Share #16! I’m glad you’re here. Please come on in, help yourself to a cup of coffee, or tea, or hot chocolate at my coffee station and let’s chat.
A quick glance at my phone shows that in April I’ve seen gorgeous daffodils, dandelions, magnolias, forsythias, pansies, ranunculus, tulips, and many more pretty flowers. I’ve also taken photos of birds, the lake shore, historic buildings and public art displays. It’s been a colourful month.
On Wednesday winter’s last hurrah brought spring snow. By Friday, it’s 15C (59F) with sunshine. My coffee share today: Pink flowers, Outdoor pets, and Spring fun list update.
1. Pink Flowers
I chose the following images to contribute to Jude’s Pink colour challenge, Becky’s Bright Square and Cee’s Flower of the Day photo challenges.

2. Outdoor Pets
Terri’s prompt for her Sunday Stills photo challenge this weekend is Pets or Kids and improvisations are accepted. So I’m improvising and introducing my outdoor “pets” that are nesting and expecting “kids”.
The first pair is Gucy and Lucy, two Canada geese. Lucy is nesting under a small tree by the waterfront. Her nest is made of mulch-like materials. Their babies (goslings) are expected after 25-28 days of incubation.
The second pair is Cob and Pen, two Mute swans. Pen is nesting on a small island. Her nest is a soft bed of round balls of grey fibres. Their babies (cygnets) are expected after 34-41 days of incubation.
I visit my outdoor “pets” often and hope to see their “kids” soon.
3. Spring Fun List Update
Back in March, I wrote a Spring Fun List of things to do while in COVID-19 lockdown. Most of my activities are outdoors or online and follow public health protocols so I’ve been checking off a few items. I’m contributing this update to Leslie’s Spring link-up.
- Cycle to explore parks, the lake shore, and the city centre: Yes, I’ve been cycling on different routes and they bring me many bits of joy.
- Take walks to enjoy nature in Spring and free outdoor public art: Yes, I take walks most days. Examples: My walk in Yorkville and the above walks to see spring flowers and bird nests.
- View Toronto’s Cherry Blossoms and the annual Canadian Tulip Festival: In progress. I’ve been watching Toronto’s cherry blossoms virtually with #BloomAtHome, a 24-hour 4K BloomCam livestream during the peak bloom period. The Canadian Tulip Festival is coming up May 14-24.
- Meet my family and friends outside: Pending. Currently, we are not allowed to gather indoors or outdoors with anyone we do not live with, until at least May 20.
- Play 9-hole disc golf in a public park: Yes, here’s my intro to how to play disc golf.
- Paddle around Toronto Islands: Pending.
- Plant a small herb garden: Pending.
- Read 1 book per week and add to my Books in 2021: Yes, average 2 books per week.
- Take photos and share my explorations on my blog: Yes, every post so far.
- Try a new restaurant take-out: Yes, the Pad Thai and curry dishes from Salad King were good.
I look forward to more cycling, walking, watching spring flower blooms and welcoming warmer weather in May. I hope the lockdown will be lifted after May 20 so I can meet up with my family and friends.

Hi Natalie – lovely flowers (I especially loved the tulips and azaleas) and the nesting birds were really cute – I didn’t know swans made nests from those strange soft grey balls – really interesting. We have black swans in Western Australia – so seeing white swans when we travelled overseas was always a treat. Thanks for another great weekend party x

Hi Leanne, I’m glad you loved the tulips and azaleas. This is the first time that I get to see the swan and goose nests in open space and up close. I read about how they choose a location to make their nests and it’s quite interesting. I haven’t seen black swans so when I see them, it will be a treat. Have a great weekend!

Good Morning Natalie from my evening in Australia. Your pink pics are awesome. I have been concerned for your guys in your city as Tamara Levitt who is ‘the voice’ of My Daily Calm app, lives in Toronto and was mentioning the lockdown. This virus is not letting up really. Sad for India too right now. I loved your take on pets/kids…you cover all the topics and posts here! I am doing one for Sunday Stills about our A.N.Z.A.C. Day here in Australia. I went out into bright sunshine today and did a quick post for Beckys Squares. Please understand this Memoir of mine is eventually finishing…this one, and then there will be two more weeks where I link up. And as you know, it appears I am running the last Australian-based link up…and I am committing to that till the end of 2021. Hi Denyse, The lockdown in Ontario has been extended until at least May 20. Our covid-19 vaccination rate is increasing every day so hopefully, we’ll be in a much better situation in May.
One upside to the lockdown is that I stay at home on weekends when the Weekend Coffee Share link-up is on. I get to blog and participate in other link-ups for fun.
I’m glad to hear you’re committed to run your link-up till the end of 2021. Hosting an active weekly link-up takes time and efforts for sure. I take one weekend at a time and hope I keep my link-up going well. Have a great weekend!

Talk about brightening our day, Natalie…your photos are absolutely stunning! We’d been busy turning our back patio into a hummingbird haven when temperatures took a nose dive. We had to bring in all of the hanging and potted plants into the garage and cover the rest. Hopefully this morning will be the last below freezing temperature for the next few months. Despite the cold, it was nice to see the hummingbirds feeding at the feeders. Thanks for sharing your lovely week. Enjoy the weekend!

Hi Jill, I’m glad you like my flower photos. We had spring snow on Tuesday overnight to about 10 a.m. Wednesday and it looked like winter wonderland outside. Then the sun came out and all the snow melt away by Wednesday afternoon. I hope the weather stays nice and your hummingbirds keep feeding at the feeders. Have a great weekend!

Cob and Pen are nice, but Gucy and Lucy have won my heart. They are just about as cute as two geese can be! Great photos of the flowers… and the expectant couple.

Gucy and Lucy are not shy at all. Gucy always stands tall and looks so proud when I see him. I checked on Lucy today and she seemed fine in her nest.

Hi Natalie another lovely post and I especially love the flowers and swans. Yesterday my husband and I went for a walk and there were two Ibis birds sitting on a fence gazing out to the ocean. Hi Cheryl, Spring has been beautiful here. My phone is full of images of flowers, birds, and colourful objects. I’ve seen ducklings and many adult Canada geese and swans but not goslings or cygnets. We’re having a slow start to spring, but my tulips and daffodils have given us a lovely show in our flower garden. I’ve spent all morning today in the vegetable garden planting my asparagus which I’ve grown from seed, tomatoes, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and fennel. Peppers will go in next week. It’s so exciting to see things grow from a tiny seed into food. Strawberries are flowering now. We ate our first radish this week. 🙂 We’ve got storks here and it’s just amazing seeing them flying over the house in the evening as they go back to their nests. So much to be thankful for and I’m enjoying every single day here in our little Bulgarian village. x

That’s fantastic, Cheryl. Your garden is bringing you joy and healthy vegetables and fruit. I saw a lot of storks and their nests when I visited Morocco and Latvia before the pandemic. It was a visual treat because I don’t see them in Toronto. I’m so glad to hear you’re enjoying life in your Bulgarian village.

I think we have another month or so before flowering plants other than spring tulips and a lone daffodil show up, here. Too cold for anything that isn’t sheltered or really close to the ground. You have some lovely flower pictures. And of the animals. We have geese returning to the area, now. Saw a lovely flight of them on the way home, earlier this afternoon. I look forward to the warmer weather and getting back into my gazebo for exercise on a more regular basis. The next door neighbors have cut down their trees, and so I expect we will see many fewer birds and squirrels, now. As long as we have tulip plants, however, there will be rabbits to greet us at dusk and dawn. 🙂 Best wishes for your week, Natalie!

Now I know what a ranunculus looks like! The flowers are lovely! We are not so fond of Canada geese around here – they tend to congregate in large groups and poop on our walking paths! I suppose they are nesting now. We had a family of five last year. One of our swan pairs is also nest-sitting. She has seven eggs! We have another pair, also, but in spite of working a lot on their nest, so far they haven’t produced anything. But there’s still time – we’ll see! Last year our swans lost their eggs at the beginning of the week they were due to hatch due to a ferocious wind/rain storm! The eggs fell into the pond, so there was nothing to be done. I hope that doesn’t happen this year!

Thank you for your visit and comment. Pink and yellow ranunculus flowers are popular in spring here. Their petals are tightly packed until they bloom. How wonderful that your swan has seven eggs. I hope they all survive. We had spring snow on Tuesday night and I was concerned for Lucy the mother goose. I checked on her after and she seemed fine sitting in her nest.

I give the parent geese good space. They’ve been pretty good to me so far. I hope to see their babies when they arrive. I’ve seen many ducklings but not goslings.

Sounds like you had a great month! This has been a great year for April flowers, though not as many April showers as usual… Glad you were able to get out and abbot and hit most of the items on your list. I see a lot of mute swan, though not as many as when I kayaked on Swan Pond every day! Nor as many geese, but am looking forward to chicks from both species. I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Oh, I’m so sorry you’re still in such a strict lockdown. Ours will largely be lifted by April 28, but I’m pretty much convinced it’ll be reimposed sooner rather than later, as the COVID infection numbers are still on the rise.

We had some loosening of restrictions in March. The case numbers started rising again so on April 1 the provincial government ordered the shutdown and two weeks later extended it.

Beautiful pink flowers! It’s funny they post signs for the Canada goose nest. We have so many Canadian goose running around in suburban parking lots they try to control the geese. (I think government people shellac the shells so the eggs don’t hatch, trying to not harm the birds but limit population). At least that’s what I remember. Have a great weekend and enjoy the spring!

We also have a big Canada geese population here and the City has a by-law asking people not to feed them. The goose that is nesting is a rare sight. I see adult Canada geese all the time but not nesting geese and their goslings. Thanks, Jeanne, for stopping by. Have a great weekend!

I love the flower pics, Natalie. Isn’t spring wonderful? Nice work on your Spring Fun List as well. Larry and I just went to the local Tulip Festival. We went in the morning at the time reserved for seniors and high risk individuals, and it was not crowded at all. It was such a lovely morning. I wish I could start every day that way. Happy spring!

I love your idea of a fun list. I had a mental fun list on the weekends when my husband would be away for drill and for annual training. I’ll admit it has been challenging the past year s when I was pregnant, post-partum, and of course the pandemic (look 3 P’s!). A lot of my fun came in the form of what restaurant or cafe I’d like to eat at. It was a good reminder to put together a physical list that I could look at rather whatever is up in the air.

I think it’s healthy to have small joys every day whether it’s a list to remind us or spontaneous fun. I enjoy going to coffee shops, too, however, we’ve been under lockdown so it’s take-out or delivery only.

Heheh… your goose pics gave me a chuckle. We have a nest out in front of Michaels. Every year, they take the same spot on the little piece of mulched ground on one of those parking island things. Every year, at least one child and several adults learn the hard way to give them room. The City even came in and created them a little “fenced area” with plastic fencing and saftey cones, but still people are just plain stupid. I’ve no problem with them. I sit down on the curb at the far end, and toss them goose friendly tidbits. The gander will even come over to me, sit down beside me, and let me pet him. i think he knows I won’t hurt them and that I bring food so they don’t have to leave the nest. It’s so much fun to see the wee babes when they hatch, too. They take over the parking lot entirely when they make the daily stroll to the small retention pond at the end of the lot. Quite the characters.

Yeah, the geese walk up to me and are good as I stay quiet and give them space. How nice that they nest in the same spot in your area. I hope to see the babies when they hatch.

Your floral shots are spectacular, Natalie! But I sure enjoyed your “pets!” How fun to witness swans nesting and prepping for their new family. The tulips look gorgeous! I love the geese nesting! I gather they would get a bit aggressive if people did disturb them. I heard it snowed over there midweek out of the blue. Your spring temperature is still far too cold for my liking! 😀 Hope you have a wonderful week ahead Natalie!

In general, nesting birds get aggressive to protect their eggs when people get too close or disturb them. These geese are good as I give them space and let them walk to me when they want to.
We had spring snow Wednesday and it all melted in the same afternoon after the sun came out. For cycling outside, I’d rather have 15C than 30C 🙂 Have a great week!

Tulips are my favourite flower Natalie, along with the protea (also pink) and Australian native flower.
As usual I read your list of fun spring activities with envy. However… I recently commented (on social media I think) about someone’s post saying they’d been on a hike to road-tripped someone nearby and I said I wished I did things like that. And they responded, “Well, why don’t you?” And it was a tad confronting as I indeed could and I had no idea what’s stopping me?

Thank you, Erica/ Erika, for going back and reading my past posts. Occasionally, I do take-out to savour a dish that I don’t make at home and to have a break from daily cooking. A change of scenery is refreshing, even in the kitchen 🙂
