Spring Flowers
First, it’s been delightful to see Spring flower blooms around here. I went for a walk in the Toronto Music Garden and took tons of photos. I’m sharing a few in violet colour below.

Next, let me introduce you to how to play disc golf at a beautiful 9-hole disc golf course. If you have never played or heard of disc golf before, read on.
How To Play Disc Golf
- Review the map of the golf course posted at the entrance. Note the direction to throw. We’re at a 9-hole course so the numbers go from 1 to 9. At a 18-hole disc golf course, the numbers go from 1 to 18.
- Here’s the game objective, how to play, and course courtesy.
- The tee pad is rectangular with soft padding. Next to it is a post that shows the tee number, par number, and the distance from the tee to the corresponding basket. Par is the number of throws a disc golfer is expected to need to complete an individual hole. Par 3 is common.
- Start at tee #1. Stand in the tee and throw your disc towards the corresponding basket (hole). The varying distance at each hole and obstacles such as trees or hills make the game fun and challenging.
- The basket for each tee is also numbered. Once your disc lands in the basket, pick it up, and follow the directional red arrow at the bottom of the basket to go to the next tee.
- Continue playing until the last hole. Have fun and remember the course courtesy. The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) Disc Golfers Code is posted at each tee.
About The Discs
- Below is a sample of 3 discs, each has a name, an image and 4 numbers on it. The yellow disc is the Driver for maximum distance, the white disc is Mid-range for a wide range of distances, and the blue disc is the Putter for short distance and putting into the basket.
- The discs have fancy names and come in different colours. When you’re new to disc golf, the variety of discs can be overwhelming. Start with an inexpensive set of bright coloured discs (not green or brown). The bright colours make it easy to locate the discs on the course. I also label the back of my discs with a sharpie.
- The 4 numbers on a disc golf disc are a flight ratings system to indicate how a disc is supposed to fly. For first time players, I’d suggest to have fun playing and not be concerned about these numbers yet.
Why Disc Golf?
- It’s a fun sport that I can play with others or alone (safer in COVID-19 times).
- It’s outdoors, usually in a park where I can play any time, weather permitting.
- It involves mental estimates, body movements, and walking.
- I like the calm and meditative feels when I play and walk the course.
- Like any sport, part of the fun is to keep playing to improve.
- The discs are light and easy to carry. Each of my discs weighs about 150g.
- The initial cost is minimal. A set of 3 discs costs about US$20.
- A disc golf bag to carry the discs is nice to have but not required (about US$20).
- The ongoing cost to play is $0 in Toronto where disc golf courses are in public parks.

Hi Denyse, Many people call these discs frisbees although there are subtle differences between the frisbee and the disc for disc golf. I use the term as posted at the golf course and by the Professional Disc Golf Association. I hope the weather at your picnic location cooperates and you all have a great time on Sunday. It’s funny to read about disc golf Natalie – a friend’s son posted on FB yesterday about buying a disc golf kit and I wondered what on earth it was – now I feel like a bit of an expert! Thanks for the explanation and for the lovely purple blooms.

Jill, I’m glad you like my flower photos. Violet is a dramatic colour. The local disc golf courses near where I live are quiet on weekdays so I enjoy playing there and it’s easy to keep a safe distance during the pandemic. Have a great weekend!

We share a “second home” with my daughter in Nashville. The local public park has a disc golf course that looks fun to play. My basic problem is that I never learned how to properly throw a frisbee! You make it sound so enjoyable, however, that perhaps I will get out and practice the next time I visit.

Molly, Check out YouTube videos on how to throw. I’d recommend to do a warm-up before you start playing to prevent injuries. Have fun when you play!

We have a few disk golf courses around us too but I’ve never tried playing. I can barely throw a frizbee.

Joanne, Sure you can throw. With practice, anyone can improve. The main thing is to have fun. When you enjoy the game, you naturally want to play often and it will lead to better results.

Hi Natalie, We call it Frisbee Golf here. We had a big course in Mooney Grove Park in Visalia, CA. We stumbled across part of one as we walked around Watson Lake here in Prescott. I’ve never tried it, but you make it sound doable and fun. Have a nice weekend.

Hi Marsha, California Junior Disc Golf Championships 2021 is scheduled to take place on October 9, 2021 at Mooney Grove Park . The disc golf course at Watson Lake is fairly new, established in 2013 and was where disc golfers competed for the 2020 Arizona State Championships. The official term is disc golf for these events. It’s fun to play or to watch professional players play. Have a great weekend!

I have never played disc golf. However, I have seen a number of courses. And our library has disc golf kits which can be checked out. I like your reasons for playing. I may have to try it sometime. The purple flowers are exquisite. Your post reminds me I need to visit our beautiful Missouri Botanical Gardens. Thanks for your post, and Enjoy your day!

I’d forgotten all about Disc Golf. Once upon a time we lived in a large apartment complex that had a Disc Golf Course that ran through it. It was lots of fun and a great way to make friends with the neighbors. Cool that you have one near you. Enjoy!

I have a feeling purple is your favorite color, or one of them (based on your profile photo). 🙂 It certainly is for me.
I’ve seen many disc golf settings in parks as we’ve traveled throughout Canada and the US. We end up in these parks to walk Maya. But I’ve never played the sport. It does sound fun. I probably won’t be good at it and need way more throws than the par indicates. Just like with mini-golf.
Yes, your guide and instructions were helpful. One question: if you carry three different discs around to play this game, can you swap them throughout one game based on your distance from the basket? Or do you pick one and use that disc for the entire game?

If you play disc golf often and stay patient, you’ll become good at it. I always say to first time players to have fun first, the rest will follow.
To answer your question, yes, after your first throw from the tee pad, you can use a different disc to continue from where your first disc landed. You can bring and play with just one disc or you can bring and play with 3 or more discs. If you bring more than 1, usually, you’d want 1 or 2 for each disc type (driver, mid-range and putter) to give you flexibility.
With 1 disc, your game is limited to what that disc can do. With more than 1 disc, you can use the disc you think is best suited for the throw, and also in case you lose a disc during a game. Some golf courses have a body of water and your disc may land in it and you can’t get it back. Many players bring 6 or more discs with them. I bring 3 for practical reasons and they meet my needs.

What fun. I had never heard of disc golf – I can imagine my ‘Frisbee’ going way off mark and slicing into some other player! I hope it’s a game not taken too seriously so anyone can join in.

I enjoyed the instructions a nd the idea for disc golf. Not sure it is something I could do with my shoulders right now, they are grouchy! But I see the merits. Violet flowers are my favorite, I liked the bell flowers in your pictures, violet iris’ and the Pasque flowers. Probably a deep purple iris would be my all time favorite. Best, Michele

Disc golf looks like so much fun. My oldest son lives very close to a free disc golf course that is maintained by the town he lives in. He has all the equipment and has played often. Beautiful spring flowers!

How cool is disc golf? Thanks for the lesson. It’s not huge here, but when I was last in Queenstown (of the memories of travel) frisbee gold (which is what we call it) was becoming quite the thing there. It looks like the perfect sport – low cost and with a walk included.

Disc golf has become more popular in the last two decades, with memberships, prize tournaments and championship events, especially in the USA. I think it’s just a matter of time for it to grow in Australia.

Thank you so much for sharing this!! I had no idea there was this much to it. Pretty sure the frat boys on my liberal arts college freshman year were playing a much simplified version!! Didn’t realize there were discs for shots from different areas on the course. And had never seen a basket. Now I want to find out if there are any courses in El Paso!
What a bouquet of beautiful flowers in your images. Bought something called a wallflower (fitting for my personality) today and it has blooms something like sage or lavender. Hopefully it will take off. We are forecast to have rain tomorrow!! Yay.

Leslie, The frisbee throw and catch games in college were simple. Disc golf is an organized sport and has become big business in the last two decades, especially in the USA. Lots of tournaments, prizes, championships, memberships, etc. There are several disc golf courses in El Paso. If you go to PDGA dot com web site and look up their Course directory for El Paso, you’ll see the list.

Hi Sue, Yes, there are disc golf courses in Australia, about a dozen around Brisbane area and more in NSW and Victoria. Disc golf is not as well known as golf even though it’s been around for a long time. Have a great weekend!

And through your introduction with the helpful photographs, you have now solved a long-time mystery for me: I spotted a disc-catcher some years back in a field, and we speculated long and hard what it might be. Every time we passed it, we had new theories (the words “Disc Catcher” had long faded so it was not labelled in any way).

I love the colours here Natalie! The croci are my favourites although I love them all :). Isn’t it funny how we can live on opposite of the world but the games we play are so similar. My husband and a friend play frisbee gold (what we call your disc golf) and have made up their own courses around our back paddock. It’s a great way for them to have a chat and play a mental game at the same time. Thanks for your descriptions and instructions, they are very much the same the world over. Debbie, I love flowers and there are so many of them in the spring. How cool that your husband and his friend have made up their own disc golf courses. Disc golf game is fun and social. The game objective and rules apply internationally. There are regional, national, and world championships for players who want to pursue them.

Bear, Are the parks closed because of COVID-19 restrictions? I have fun playing disc golf, both alone or with others. It’s good to practice alone and I go at my own time and pace.

Yes. The restrictions only allow 2 people on the course…but that’s in another county from me. I’m not going to pay for a park pass when there are so many restrictions that there’s nothing to do but sit in the car. Very frustrating.

The spring flowers have been beautiful here. I used to play “Frisbee” all of the time, but only played around with disk golf once or twice. Looks like a fun sport.have a great weekend!

Hi Suzanne, There are many disc golf courses in Florida. If you go to PDGA dot com web site and do a Course search, it will show a list of what’s available in FL.
I have so many photos of spring flowers in different colours. I chose Violet to participate in Terri’s Sunday Stills challenge this weekend. It’s a coincidence that the colour matches my profile pic 🙂

Beautiful flowers. Nice intro to Disk Golf. I have actually played it a couple of times in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. There are no tee times and it is free. It is an 18-hole wooded course. You can register and get a handicap and everything.

I just LOVE all the flowers, the blues and purples are gorgeous! My eyes go to the blues, since they are more unusual and so beautiful!! Thank you for sharing the disc golf. Yes, the common name for Muscari botryoides is grape hyacinths. They’re lovely to see in spring here.

Natalie, I’ve been taking pictures of spring blooms as I realize that it might be our last spring bloom experience for a while. Florida has a very different spring. My favorite purples are Hyacinth and Lilac. I’m hoping our lilacs will bloom before we leave!

Pat, That’s a great idea to take pictures of things that are unique in your current home area. Hyacinths and lilacs are lovely. We usually get hyacinths in April and lilac blooms in May here. The smell of lilacs is intoxicating, especially in the evenings. I hope your packing and house sale are going well.

I did a bit of this when I was in Canberra for awhile by myself. It’s great, easy exercise and an entertaining way to ‘forest bath’ when you don’t have a forest handy! 😉
