Hello and welcome to Weekend Coffee Share #12! I’m glad you’re here. Please come on in, help yourself to a cup of coffee, or tea, or hot chocolate at my coffee station and let’s chat.
The first week of Spring has been fantastic. Daytime high temperatures ranged from 12C to 20C (54F to 68F) with clear blue skies for most of the week. The mild and sunny days made all my outdoor activities enjoyable and me happy.
Here’s my 5 selected themes for a fun week:
1. Architecture
On sunny morning #1, I cycled to Queen Street West to visit several heritage-designated buildings. I’m sharing two of them with Thursday Doors photo challenge this week: Campbell House and Osgoode Hall. Click on my image gallery for more photos and history details.
Campbell House is the oldest remaining house from the original site of the Town of York, and is one of the few surviving examples of Georgian architecture left in Toronto. It was built in 1822 by Chief Justice William Campbell and his wife Hannah. It’s now a heritage house and museum owned by the City of Toronto government.

Osgoode Hall is named for William Osgoode, the first Chief Justice of Upper Canada (now the province of Ontario). The original building was constructed between 1829 and 1832. The iron fence around the property dates from 1867. The so-called “cow gates” were based on the design of cattle guards meant to keep out grazing animals.
Osgoode Hall was built over a period of 190 years, so as to accommodate the growing needs of its owners. A National Historic Site of Canada and a Heritage building of Ontario, it currently houses the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Superior Court of Justice, and the Law Society of Ontario.

Before COVID-19, I had done tours inside both Campbell House and Osgoode Hall. The impressive interior of Osgoode Hall includes the Rotunda with the original tile floor, heritage courtrooms from the late 1800’s, the Great Library with holdings of 100,000 volumes, Benchers’ Quarters, and Convocation Hall that boasts ten gorgeous stained glass windows covering 4,000 years of law. I highly recommend this tour when Osgoode Hall re-opens to the public.
2. Art
On sunny morning #2, I cycled and walked around to see outdoor public art: Two portraits at the Femme de Fleur exhibit by Apanaki Temitayo M, one Untitled display by Jun Kaneko, and Cracked Wheat by Shary Boyle.
I realized later that coincidentally, all four art items have a human body theme. The Cracked Wheat vase stands on two human legs. Click on the images to see their bigger version.

3. Beaches
On sunny morning #3, I cycled along the shoreline of Lake Ontario and checked out several beaches. It was a glorious day to be by the calm water. By lunch time, I sat down on Sunnyside beach and watched a group of mute swans. They swam, ducked their heads for food, spread their wings, etc. It was an amazing swan show!
4. Disc Golf
On sunny morning #4, I cycled to the local 9-hole disc golf course and played my first disc golf game of 2021. It was a perfect day to play. Calm wind, pleasant temperature, and soft sunlight. I enjoyed playing while listening to birds, watching the squirrels, and looking at the lake.
5. Nature Trails
On sunny morning #5, I cycled to High Park, a big and beautiful park in the west end of Toronto. I explored nature trails, walked among tall trees, listened to birds, and watched the ducks in Grenadier Pond. Total bliss!
Overall, it was a fun-filled week. I’m grateful that I’m able to do what makes me happy.

Ally, I don’t know which state you’re in. Are you land locked? Beaches are lovely, especially when they are not crowded. I count my blessings to live near one of the Great Lakes and a string of freshwater beaches.

I enjoyed this post, very much, Natalie. As for the doors, the Campbell House and Osgoode Hall are both remarkable buildings and I am so happy to see that they’ve been so well preserved. I love that photograph of the massive iron gate. I hope you continue to enjoy spring. It looks like you have lots of wonderful places to pass the time.

Dan, I’m glad you enjoyed my post. Thankfully, Campbell House and Osgoode Hall are Heritage buildings and a National Historic Site so they’re here to stay. Some of the iron gates work like revolving doors, and the black iron fence goes all around Osgoode Hall property. I try to visit old and surviving buildings in Toronto before they collapse or get replaced by new developments.

I’m glad you’re enjoying some nice weather, Natalie. Over the past week, we’ve had a couple close calls with tornadoes in the area. Thankfully, the one yesterday evening went about 4 miles north of us. I loved your photos today! We have a 9-hole disc golf course close to our home. I love regular golf, but have never tried it with a disc. Being a beach lover, I’d head to the ocean! Have a great weekend.

The weather has been fabulous hasn’t it? We had two swans on our lake this week and I could not get over how large they looked in comparison to the ducks and birds we usually see.

Yes, the swans are the largest of the waterfowl. I saw one making its nest yesterday. I’ll be looking out for baby swans.

Gotta love spring! We’re vascillating between rain, storms, and sun here. Definitely spring. Temps yesterday upper 60s F and almost sunny, this morning I’d say 50’s and rainy. Windstorms last night, but really mild ones. I forgot my phone this morning so I’ll have to wait to post my coffee share.

I must admit I am slightly jealous of your springtime weather and proximity to daily adventures. But if I were being perfectly honest, I’m sure there are adventures in my city as well. While cycling has never held much interest to me, I do look forward to walking around the neighborhood. I’m always fascinated by how quickly the trees bud and bloom. The scenery seems to change on a daily basis.

Yes, there are a lot of beautiful buildings here in Bulgaria. I haven’t been to the capital yet, Sofia, but we lived in the ‘old capital’, Veliko Tarnovo, when we arrived at the end of July last year and some of the old architecture there is just amazing! We’ve visited some nearby towns and villages so far, and as soon as the weather starts to improve we’ll head further afield to see what other treasures we can find!

Lovely photos again. You did a great job giving us a tour around Toronto. I would choose the nature trail or the lake. One of my great aunts lived in Welland, I do not know if that is anywhere near Toronto.

I love history and so appreciate the photos of the buildings and the information that you provide, but as a Beach Girl, I have to say the beaches get my vote! One of the many things I appreciate about your posts is that I get to travel, and broaden my horizons, from the comfort of my office. You have been having some wonderful early spring adventures. Riding your bike everywhere! I love how you incorporate fitness, art, and history in your travels. My kids all play disc golf. I think I must learn how to play. It looks really fun!

Spring is great for cycling because it’s not too hot to be outside. I choose a different theme and destination for every excursion and it’s been great. Disc golf is fun. The discs are light and inexpensive (unlike golf clubs). I think you’ll enjoy playing it.

Here we have frisbee game which doesn’t involve a golf course and disc catchers, and disc golf game which is played at a disc golf course with tee pads and disc catchers. Have a great weekend!

What a lovely week you’ve had! Our weather deteriorated a lot, but it’s been ok, until today. It’s been a frustrating week in many ways, but it will get better. It’s supposed to rain all the weekend which means lots of time for music.
Of your themes, I’d choose nature hikes anytime! I hope you’ll have a good weekend.

Hi Natalie, I will always choose nature but those beautiful buildings interest me too. You have so much history in your area. The Gold Coast, my home, has very little in the way of historic buildings and nothing as impressive as these. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine, Christina

Hi Natalie, I loved the synchronised swan dance! Your days are looking lovely and so much fun. My husband plays what we call ‘frisbee gold’ your disc golf and he always enjoys it! We are cooling down here with autumn but still able to go for bike rides. Lovely to read about your fun filled week.

Yay for milder weather and all the outdoors you can explore. I have just been outside to put washing on the line, blue sky with nary a cloud and Autumn is in the air. I am going to explore areas locally that were underwater a week ago. Love how much you have been able to get outside again! Thanks for the link up, as always.

Every week I look forward to having this cup of tea with you – I enjoy so much the sights and sounds of Toronto! I am so taken by the lovely architecture, and all that street art … and that weather you are having now …. so perfect for walking, running, and biking (that I have yet to restart – this is in our longer term plans).
I am particularly captivated by the sculpture “Cracked Wheat” – it must be rather large, yes? An are those legs?
Had to look up Disc Golf – it looks like it might be similar to Frisbee Golf? Do you play alone or with friends?

My guesstimate for the Cracked Wheat sculpture is about 3 meters tall and close to 1 meter wide, and yes, those are two bronze legs with human feet. If you click on my Cracked Wheat image, it should appear larger and easier to see.
Due to the pandemic, I currently play disc golf by myself so that I’m not with other people and I’m on my own schedule. The discs look like frisbees. To my knowledge, disc golf and frisbee are two different games. Disc golf is played on an actual course with tee pads and baskets called disc catchers. Frisbee you can play anywhere with a disc.

When I lived in Texas, I had some friends who played frisbee golf – I am not sure if they actually played on a real golf course all the time, but I think they did set up some sort of course. Maybe they are related but Disc Golf sounds a while lot more organised!

There is a Professional Disc Golf Association and all kinds of tournaments organized around the world, more in some countries like the USA than others. I play disc golf casually for fun.

We have had a few rain showers this week, but typically at night. Yesterday here was foggy and cool, though very warm and sunny inland. I still enjoyed it, even though it was nicer just a few miles away. Hope your weekend is going well 🙂

I have had lunch in Osgoode Hall, would love to do that again when the restrictions lift. I also want to take the lunchtime tour of Osgoode Hall.

Yes, we are. Osgoode Hall interior is beautiful to see. The Flemme de Fleur exhibit is at Harbourfront. The Cracked Wheat and Untitled art items are outside Gardiner museum. Have a great weekend!

Beaches and nature trails are wonderful. Some trails have uneven surfaces or roots and rocks which require caution and attention.

Natalie, wow! What a beautiful week and it looks like a film to me! The ocean, venturing into a city (love the statues!), beautiful nature trail and disc golf (what is that?!!) Annika, It was a fun week with a mix of urban and nature. What you see as an ocean is Lake Ontario. It’s the second smallest of the 5 Great Lakes and still so big, it looks like an ocean. The disc golf course is right by the lake so you can certainly play a disc golf game while being close to the lake. Win-win 🙂 Have a beautiful week ahead!

B, Are there any lake beaches that you can go to in Zimbabwe? I can go to a lake beach easily (freshwater) but would have to travel far for an ocean beach (salt water).

Yep, there’s lake beaches but they don’t quite have that thing🤣🤣🤣 and since Zimbabwe is land locked, well no ocean beach.
Oh but the best lake beach I have been at was Lake Malawi well in Malawi 🤣that looks like an ocean even but yeah freshwater lake.

I miss the days when I use to be a bike’s distance to the beach, art, and historical buildings. Nowadays I need to make a short drive. Maybe when my kid can sit up properly and I buy the right stuff, we can go biking again.

What a wonderful start to spring in your entertaining and diverse Toronto, Natalie. I just love those blue skies and you sure made the most of the beautiful days. My favorite themes would be nature and art. Being outside, exploring and walking – and discovering new art work or wildlife “exhibits” – would make me happy as well. Happy spring!!

Spring looks like it’s definitely sprung in Toronto and it’s glorious! I think I would go with the beach theme but might have to add one more theme – cafes – because coffee is life. I love how you always get out and about and see and do so much!

I also love cafes, Sammie. We’ve been in lockdown since November 2020 which allows coffee to go but no sitting inside a coffee shop so I have coffee at home before I head outside.

Things still look pretty wintry and brown up there. Although, they do here, too!! And we have had highs in the 80s already with a promise of two days in the 90s already next week. The grass isn’t even green yet. Crazy.
When you go on these adventures, do you generally do them by yourself? The disc golf, for example. Or do you meet up with friends or join some folks already playing? I am so introverted and socially awkward it would be hard for me to play a game like that with anyone else. Pretty sure you are more outgoing than I.

Leslie, I go on these adventures by myself so I can go at my own pace and stay apart from people during the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re now in Wave 3 of the pandemic. My province is going into a 4-week shutdown starting April 3 to slow the spread of the virus. Vaccination rollout is ramping up. I hope we’ll be in a better situation by the end of April.
I’m also an introvert. When I meet new people, I’m friendly and have no trouble having a conversation. I’m not good at small talk though and feel awkward when people make long small talks.

I’m glad to hear that the weather has been sunny and you’ve been able to do lots of cycling. We have been enjoying skiing this winter on our local hill. Easter Monday was the last day and we were up there enjoying skiing in glorious sunshine. Now it’s time to turn my mind to bike riding and kayaking.

The weather here has been so good since March. It’s ideal for cycling. I remember you’ve got a kayak last year. I hope the weather in your area cooperates so you can go cycling and kayaking.
