Dan at No Facilities blog is hosting the Thursday Doors photography challenge. The challenge is open to everyone to participate in. Since December is a month of holidays, I’m sharing my favourite doors from 2020 with red, green, gold and a few more bright colours. Here’s my entry this week.
Gibraltar Point Lighthouse
The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse was built in 1808 to protect ships coming into Toronto harbour from washing ashore during storms. It’s the oldest landmark in Toronto, the oldest surviving lighthouse on the Great Lakes, and the second oldest surviving lighthouse in Canada.
It is said that the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse is haunted. Its first lighthouse keeper J.P. Radan Muller, was murdered by two soldiers from Fort York. The ghost of of J.P. Radan Muller returns every summer, and on hot summer nights, his howls can be heard from one end of the island to the other.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, I had a wonderful summer paddling around the Toronto islands where the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse is located. The red door accentuates the quintessential beauty of the lighthouse.
Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO)
The bold red AGO sign and a modern set of doors welcome people to the Art Gallery of Ontario, one of the largest art museums in North America. Enter the AGO to see, experience, and understand the world in new ways.
Union Station in Toronto
Union Station is Canada’s busiest passenger transportation hub and a designated national historic site. In December, a Christmas tree is brightly lit at the station entrance with snowflake-designed banners in the background. The tall columns are some of the 22 limestone columns, each column weighs 75 tons and is 40 feet high.
I’d love to hear your comments.

Jill, The Gibraltar Point lighthouse holds fond memories of many summers on Toronto Islands for me. Considering that it was built in 1808, it’s been well kept and looks gorgeous.

I absolutely love the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse! If I ever get back to Toronto, that is clearly on my list of places to visit. A lighthouse, a train station and an art gallery – you couldn’t pick a more interesting group for me.
Thanks for joining us for the challenge. I hope you enjoy the holidays and I’m looking forward to more doors in 2021.

Hi Natalie! I love lighthouses and have three replicas on display at our house. They’re all the New Jersey lighthouses, the state where I grew up in the U.S. Thanks for sharing this picture and your door pictures!

Hi Barbara, How wonderful that you have three lighthouse replicas to remind you of NJ. Lighthouses usually have many stories. Wishing you an enjoyable holiday season!

I haven’t read that book or seen the movie. I add the book to my to-read list. Thanks for mentioning it, Barbara.
I found “The Lighthouse” movie starring Robert Pattison and Willem Dafoe hard to watch.

Great selection of doors, Natalie, fit for the season. The lighthouse is my favorite. When we visited Bisbee, Arizona, this last week, I took photos of some cool doors as well in anticipation of joining this Thursday Doors challenge one of these months. 🙂 Happy holidays!

Your photos are amazing Natalie. I often think of you when I take photos with my phone. I enjoy all of your photos. I especially like the lighthouse.🙂

Erica/ Erika, I’m glad you like my photos. Coming from an older phone model, they’re pretty good. I reduce the image size before posting the images on my blog. I don’t do any touch-up. I think parts of Toronto are photogenic, like the lighthouse, and that helps 🙂

Reducing image size? I will think about this and what it means for posting and room.

Reducing image size is easy to do. Some key benefits include faster loading of your blog post with photos and the images take up less storage space.

I know you are a busy lady, Natalie with many interests and activities. I appreciate you getting back to me. Have you found my posts take a longer time to load on your screen? I should make a point of reducing image size. It likely won’t make a difference on how the photos look on my site.

No worries, Erica/ Erika. Your latest post didn’t take a longer time to load on my screen. When I resize my images, it doesn’t affect how they look on my blog. I always do Preview before posting. WordPress works in the background to make the images adapt to any screen (e.g. computer, tablet, phone).
The difference in file size between the original image and the resized/ compressed image is huge. Over time this difference adds up to a lot of storage space especially when I take a lot of photos. Also it takes longer to do a back up when the media library size is big.

Jude, The oldest existing lighthouse in Canada, built in 1758, is on Sambro Island at the mouth of Halifax harbour. On the Pacific coast, near Victoria, Fisgard lighthouse, built in 1860, is the oldest.
